MAX and MAX-G PLB : a new dimension in rescue beacons
McMurdo has launched two boundary-breaking new PLBs (Personal Locator Beacons), the FastFind MAX and the Fastfind MAX G (with integral 12 channel GPS). The MAX range adds new dimensions to safety with a maximum 48 hour operational battery life from activation, and it operates at temperatures as low as -20°C.

McMurdo PLB aids rescue of lone British sailor
A yachtsman was rescued on 4th January after activating his McMurdo FastFind Plus GPS Personal Location Beacon off the coast of Africa when his yacht got into difficulties in severe storms. The 1929 gaff rig cutter Mina was extensively damaged by waves leaving the yacht stranded.

McMurdo and RNLI sign long term MOB Guardian contract
McMurdo has signed a long term contract with the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), to supply the RNLI’s MOB Guardian rescue system.
The RNLI have underwritten the first 300 systems ($450k), which McMurdo has begun supplying last month. The order will be completed by March 2008.

Urgency Noted by NOAA in Changeover to 406 Frequency
Older emergency beacons, which operate on the 121.5 and 243 megahertz frequencies, will be phased out by early 2009, when 406 megahertz beacons will become the new standard. A key advantage of some the 406 megahertz beacons is they use Global Positioning System technology for instant detection, leading to faster rescues.
